Senior Data Engineer

Are you a data engineer who takes genuine pride in how pipelines are built, not just that they run? Do you care about clean architecture, proper version control, and infrastructure that your colleagues can trust and build on? And do you get more motivated by solving a genuinely complex data problem than by maintaining something that already works? Then we want to hear from you.

This is a Group-level role. Your work spans all four of our Nordic markets, four different business system landscapes, and a data platform that serves the entire organization.

At Hans Just Group we are proud to distribute some of the world's best-known spirits and wine brands such as Jägermeister, Aperol, Hendrick's Gin, Tullamore D.E.W., Cointreau, Campari, Licor 43, Shake-It Mixers and many more. ogether we are committed to working for a more efficient and innovative future with a growing focus on technology. At Hans Just Group, you will become part of a family-owned company with a culture built on strong relationships, a consistent set of values, and the ambition to remain both independently owned and genuinely world-class.

About the Position

Four countries. Multiple business systems. A broad set of external data partners delivering market data, sales channel data, and partner reporting - all needing to flow into a single, reliable Microsoft Fabric-based data platform that serves the entire organization. That platform is actively being built and scaled, and this is the role that owns the engineering layer.

Within Hans Just Group, Digital Excellence supports all areas of the business and is designed to accelerate and implement strategic and digital programs across Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden. Data is central to that work - and the decisions made now about how the platform is built will shape what the organization can do with its data for years to come.

This is a role for a data engineer who wants to shape the technical direction of a platform, not just execute tickets on it.

The Role

You will work in close collaboration with the Data & Analytics Lead, based in the Helsinki office, and report to the Head of Digitalization. At the core of the Group's data platform, this is a two-person expert team: the Data & Analytics Lead brings architectural vision, data modelling expertise, and ownership of data strategy, governance, and data quality; you bring the engineering rigor to build, scale, and operate it reliably across four countries. The Data & Analytics Lead is responsible for translating business requirements and managing stakeholder relationships — but you are part of those conversations, not shielded from them. Understanding the business context behind the data is part of doing the job well.

The data flowing through your pipelines powers commercial decisions for some of the world's most recognized premium brands — Jägermeister, Aperol, Hendrick's Gin, Campari, and many more — across every Nordic market. That context matters, and the right person for this role will find it motivating.

You will have a high degree of autonomy on technical decisions within the data engineering domain. Technical ownership here means more than executing decisions handed to you - we want someone with the confidence and depth to challenge an approach, propose a better one, and stand behind it.

As Hans Just Group's data capability matures, we plan to expand the team further. This hire is an important foundation.

Your Core Ownership Areas

  • Microsoft Fabric data platform - The heart of this role. You own the technical architecture of pipelines and notebooks: Lakehouse design, ingestion patterns, transformation logic, and the structural decisions that determine how data flows reliably across all four Nordic entities.
  • GitHub and version control practices - You set the standard for how code is managed, reviewed, and released across the data platform.
  • CI/CD pipelines - You design and maintain the deployment workflows that keep development fast and production stable.
  • Azure SQL Server - We are beginning to build internal applications on Azure with SQL Server as the backend - you will own the data engineering layer for these workloads as this area develops.

Day-to-Day Engineering Work

  • Design, build and maintain end-to-end data pipelines in Microsoft Fabric - ingesting, transforming and delivering data from multiple source systems across all four Nordic entities.
  • Write clean, well-documented Python, PySpark and SQL code that your colleagues can maintain, extend, and debug without calling you.
  • Implement automated data quality checks and validation rules at the pipeline level - failures should be caught in the pipeline, not discovered in a report.
  • Apply solid data modelling principles when structuring data products - understanding how downstream BI consumption works, including Power BI semantic models, informs how you build.
  • Document pipeline architecture, data models, and engineering decisions so that knowledge stays with the team, not individuals.
  • Identify and act on opportunities to improve platform performance, reduce technical debt, and adopt new Fabric capabilities as they evolve.

Impact Beyond Pipelines

  • Translate business requirements into robust technical solutions alongside the Data & Analytics Lead — you help shape what gets built, not just how.
  • Understand source system behaviour, data anomalies, and operational context across Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden — the differences between markets are real and affect how data should be handled.
  • Coordinate where source system changes, API updates, or infrastructure decisions affect the data platform.
  • Help build a growing internal data capability — establishing engineering standards and a team culture where quality is the default.

What We Are Looking For

Technical Skills — Required

  • 4+ years of solid, hands-on data engineering experience - processing, transforming, and modelling data at production scale, not just in prototypes.
  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft Fabric or Databricks - you understand lakehouse architecture, and what good looks like in a cloud-native data platform.
  • Excellent PySpark and SQL skills - window functions, query optimization, debugging under pressure; Python and Polars are a strong plus.
  • GitHub - pull requests, branching strategies, code reviews; you treat data code the way software engineers treat application code.
  • CI/CD - you have built or managed deployment pipelines and understand why they matter for a data platform.
  • Strong data modelling fundamentals — dimensional modelling, data vault concepts, or equivalent; you think carefully about how data is structured before you build.
  • Working knowledge of Azure SQL Server.

Technical Skills — Valued

  • Power BI semantic model development and understanding of how the report layer consumes datasets.
  • Experience with agentic coding workflows and AI-assisted development - using tools like Claude Code, GitHub Copilot, or similar development environments as a tool.
  • Master data management - experience designing or contributing to MDM solutions,
  • Infrastructure-as-code familiarity - managing platform configuration and deployments in a repeatable, version-controlled way.

The Person We Are Looking For

  • Technical skills matter. But we are also looking for a specific type of engineer. If the following sounds like you, we would like to meet you:
  • You are genuinely excited about data - not just as a job, but as a craft. You follow platform developments, have opinions about architecture, and find the problems interesting.
  • You are confident in making technical decisions and owning them. When something is wrong, you say so - with a clear explanation and a better alternative.
  • You take ownership seriously. If a pipeline breaks, you fix it and then you make sure it does not break the same way again.
  • You are comfortable with ambiguity. You do not wait for perfect requirements before making progress.
  • You are curious about the business context behind the data - understanding why something matters makes you better at building it.
  • You can hold a conversation with non-technical colleagues and make yourself understood - bridging the gap between data and business when needed comes naturally to you.
  • You document as you build. Future-you and your colleagues will thank you.
